2008 Week 17 - Championship

Keith McLeod drove The Look Company - Lewis Motor Sales #19 to 5th place in the final feature of the season on Saturday night and wrapped up the 2008 Championship in NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model racing at Barrie Speedway. It was Keith’s first track title in his 7th full season of racing at Barrie. His rookie season was 25 years ago at Barrie racing against guys like Garry Reynolds and Alan Inglis and both of those veterans were also on the track in the Late Models this year.

Keith had taken most of the championship drama out of the final feature with a win and a second in the heat action extending his lead to 31 points. He needed to take the green in the feature and stay out of trouble to cement the title. At the start he was boxed in and got caught in the wrong lane but fought back to get to 5th place behind a tight train of the track’s top runners. This was not a night to take any chances though and he settled in for his 14th top five finish of the year in 17 starts, the most of any of the competitors at the track.

Ironically the race was won by Robin Jongen who put a fender ahead at the line to take his first win of the year. Jongen’s crewchief is Darrell Eacott and his dad John won the 1974 Barrie title driving a car co-owned by Keith’s dad Ron McLeod.

As has been the case all season long, the night’s successes were a direct result of a hard working championship pit crew. After finishing the second heat, the crew discovered that the alternator bracket had failed and they quickly went about fixing that for the feature run. This season has been like that, with the crew often solving problems and making adjustments along the way and usually delivering the fastest car by feature time.

In victory lane Keith was presented with the track championship trophy by two of the Speedway’s ownership group, Dave Simpson and Jim Payetta. He took a moment to read over the names engraved on it, many of whom were childhood heros. Keith first attended races at the Oro oval as a babe in arms in 1967 and spent every summer Saturday night at the track until he was old enough to get behind the wheel himself.

This past Saturday he was able to celebrate with the whole family. His wife Jeanne is a constant supporter who plays an integral part on the team with responsibilities for keeping the car looking like new, tracking tires, results and lap times. His daughters Cassandra and Emily lead a growing contingent of young fans under the watchful eyes of his mother June (a former employee of Lewis Motors in Barrie) and her husband Gorman. His dad Ron drives up every weekend from London to work on the car and brother Rod helps out when he can as well.

There are a few McLeods on the team but the family is really extended to the whole crew. In the late 1980s when Keith couldn’t afford to race, he helped out with John Mombourquette on his car and after John’s back problems took him from an active role in racing he’s joined the team as a consultant. He brought with him his father-in-law Gary Tjepkema who worked for many years on John’s crew.

Wade Ellis joined the team in the latter part of the 2002 season and saw the team come close for the first time as they were in contention up to the last night of racing. He’s been a solid member of crew since then and was itching for the comeback in 2007 after a two year layoff.

This season saw the welcome addition of the Cook family to the crew. Glenn happened to be there as a spectator the first night when all hands were needed to solve some major engine problems and has been back every night since. His wife Ruthann and daughter Sara have also been pitching in all season.

This is also the first championship in the top class at Barrie for a Dodge motor. Billy Howard has provided Keith with Dodge power for many years and his own history at the Speedway goes all the way back to opening night in 1965 when his uncle Lloyd won the very first feature.

In the championship interview Keith thanked the whole crew and of course paid tribute to the excellent relationships he’s enjoyed with his sponsors The Look Company and Lewis Motor Sales.

“The Look Company returned to the team this season after our great run last year. Lewis Motor Sales also came back this year for their 5th season. I’m very happy to bring home a NASCAR championship to Ed and Debbie and everyone at The Look Company as well as Brad and the team at Lewis Motor Sales.” Keith said.

Keith will be representing The Look Company, Lewis Motor Sales and Barrie Speedway as the 2008 Champion at the NASCAR Whelen All American Series banquet on November 7 in Las Vegas.

2008 Week 17 - A Channel Morning Show Appearance

Keith had The Look Company - Lewis Motor Sales #19 Dodge out early on Friday September 19 for a Barrie Speedway appearance on the Barrie A Channel's new morning show.

Here he gives show host K. C. Colby some driving tips before K.C.'s spin around the lot.

The team is back in action on Saturday night September 20 to try and lock-up the championships on the final night of racing at Barrie after yet another rain-out on September 13.

2008 Week 16 - 30 Aug

The night started off well with an early lead in the 1st heat but with 4 laps to go a problem in the engine left the engine running on only 7 cylinders. Keith nursed it home to win the race but afterwards it was determined that the problem was not corretable at the track.

A potentially disasterous night was averted thanks to the generous offer from Larry Woodward for Keith to borrow the #50 car for the balance of the evening.

In the second heat he drove the renumbered #19 orange Dodge to a 5th place finish his first time behind the wheel. That race provided lots of input for the crew to make setup changes for the feature.

In the feature Keith found the car more to his liking and followed Dwayne Baker through from the back of the pack. He ended up in 4th place at the line just out of the top 3.

After the races the track applied an unwritten rule that you can only score points with one car so the 1st heat win doesn't count in the season tally. The point gap closed from 49 to 28 points heading into the final night of racing on Sep 13 with double features on tap.

Results: Heats 1st (nc) and 5th, Feature - 4th
Record: 4 wins, 13 top 5, 15 top 10, 10 Heat wins
Standings: 1st place (+28)

2008 Week 15 - Aug 23

The night was hot and humid and it seemed to be the catalyst for very close racing throughout the Late Model feature. Keith ended up 7th on the night, two spots behind championship rival Gord Shepherd. A better performance in the heats though meant that the gap remained at 49 points with three features remaining in the 2008 season.

Results: Heats 1st and 4th, Feature - 7th
Record: 4 wins, 12 top 5, 14 top 10, 9 Heat wins
Standings: 1st place (+49)

2008 Week 14 - Aug 20

A rare mid-week points race at Barrie was held as a make-up for the many rainouts this year. The night turned out to be a very good one for the team in its quest for the 2008 points title at Barrie. After a heat win and a 4th, Keith drove the #19 Real Dodge through heavy traffic to finish 2nd behind Dwayne Baker. Three times as Keith mounted his charge through the pack, things happened and he slid backwards all the way to the back again but eventually things settled down and he began to make-up some ground. He finally moved pass rookie Kyle Baker for 2nd late int he race but by then Dwayne had checked out on the field and the race was over.

Second place point man Gord Shepherd finished well back in the pack so Keith again extended his lead atop the Barrie and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series provincial standings.

Results: Heats 1st and 4th, Feature - 2nd
Record: 4 wins, 12 top 5, 13 top 10, 8 Heat wins
Standings: 1st place (+49)

2008 Week 13 - Aug 16

Keith drove The Look Company - Lewis Motor Sales #19 to his 4th Feature win of the season in NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model racing at Barrie Speedway on Saturday night and extended his points lead in the season standings in both the track and provincial standings.

The night’s racing had two features on tap to try and make up for some of the summer rainouts that have kept the team off the track for too many Saturdays this year.

The first feature line-up was to be set by time trials and Keith drew the first qualifying position which put him on the track before all of his other competitors. It was up to him to set the mark to beat and he did that on his second timed lap with a time of 14.597 seconds. No one else was able to dip below 14.6, giving him the pole for the night’s first feature. He is now 2 for 2 in setting fast time for the 2008 time trials.

On the green flag in the feature, he passed outside pole-sitter Garry Reynolds on the first lap and was never challenged as he led every lap enroute to his Late Model leading tally of 4 feature victories.

After thanking the sponsors, crew and family In victory lane, Keith had to roll the dice to determine the number of cars from the first feature finishing order that would be inverted for the start of the second feature.

The first roll netted a 1 and the second was a 3 for a total of 4 putting The Look Company - Lewis Motor Sales #19 on the outside of the second row in the night’s finale. Some early contact between second place point man Gord Shepherd and defending champion Dwayne Baker put Shepherd to the rear and Keith restarted in third place. The top three cars led by Dave Lewis stayed very close throughout the rest of the race but no mistakes were made and the result was a third place finish for #19.

The night provided a little breathing room at the top of the points tally in the very hotly contested season standings but a tough stretch of 4 features in 10 days begins on Wednesday August 20. Keith has had a great season so far with 4 features, 11 top 5s, 12 top 10s in 13 starts with only a single feature DNF for mechanical problems.
Results: Time Trials - 1st, Feature 1 - 1st, Feature 2 - 3rd
Record: 4 wins, 10 top 5, 11 top 10, 7 Heat wins
Standings: 1st place (+36)

2008 Week 12 - Aug 2

Another strong night for point racing with a solid top 4 in the feature and just not enough laps to get any higher. A 3rd in the 1st heat and a 1st in the second added to the night's tally.

Results: Heats 3rd and 1st, Feature - 4th
Record: 3 wins, 9 top 5, 10 top 10, 7 Heat wins
Standings: 1st place (+13)
